Preventing Deep Vein Thrombosis

A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot occurring in a deep leg vein. The clot may grow big enough to completely block the vein. Surgery and inactivity put you at risk for developing blood clots.

How to Prevent DVT After Surgery

Preventing DVT means improving blood flow back to your heart. Your surgeon will recommend:

  • early ambulation as soon as possilbe after surgery

  • wear pnuematic stockings while in bed

  • wearing white "ted" hose

  • chemoprevention - enoxiparin or heparin to thin the blood (risk associated with this treatment is significant bleeding, but it is recognized that this risk is outweighed by the risks of DVT and pulmonary embolism).

At Home

  •   continue chemoprevention as ordered, checking blood work as ordered

  • . Elevate your legs whenever they feel swollen or heavy.

  •   continue wearing ted hose as ordered

  •   flex and rotate ankle multiple times a day

Elevating bed
Elevate the foot of your bed 5-6 inches using a foam wedge.

Wiggling toes
When you're sitting, wiggle your toes and tighten your calves to keep blood moving.

Elastic stockings
Wear elastic stockings at all times, except when you're in bed.
